Paths

Paths are the veins of this terrain, and reach virtually everywhere. There is not a single piece of land that does not have at least one path leading to it.
In this abrupt clay terrain, it is difficult to travel along the paths, especially in the rainy season. In cases where the slopes are steep, elements and everyday use cause the paths to erode quickly. It is for this reason that most of these paths, and without a doubt the most important ones, are paved. In the past, they were paved with stones.
This cobbled pavement was fashioned by laying stones, generally on their sides, perpendicular to the direction of the path’s slope. Ditches and drains were designed to channel the water away from the pavement, in order protect it.
The effect of using these paths with modern forms of transport, such as cars, motorcycles and tractors, has led to their deterioration. In addition, modern road constructing techniques with gravel or tar have put an end to the construction of new cobblestone paths and to the restoration of the existing ones.
