Buildings within the village

This section, more than any other, would require a whole book, but as already stated, our aim is to provide a basic overview of the dry stone structures and constructions in this area. Up until recently, all the buildings inside the village were built using this technique.

These houses were built by masons, although the owners would also help with their construction. They were built with dry stone, then “aubar” (a non-claylike type of earth) was added to fill in the gaps and make the stone more secure.

People who could afford it had the façades of their houses coated with sand and lime, or plaster mixed with sand and lime, in order to cover the stone and give the house a more elegant appearance.

The development of new building materials has brought an end to the use of dry stone in the construction of new homes.
