Dry Stone

La Fatarella, a village in the Catalan region of Terra Alta, has always had a close relationship with its rural areas. An examination of this terrain reveals man’s imprint upon its landscape, adorned with numerous constructions that integrate perfectly with their surroundings and which are primarily built of stone.

These constructions were originally built to meet the needs of a farming village involved in agriculture, cattle raising and construction.

One of the farmers’ many tasks were stone cutting and construction. When there was less work in the fields, generally in the summer, the farmer would spend his time building any number of structures and constructions, both within and outside of the village. They traditionally used a dry stone building technique which consisted of placing more or less matching stones one on top of the other without the use of any kind of mortar to fasten them.Dry stone in La Fatarella.
